I'm sure unless you live under a rock, you've heard about this, but just in case you have not....
The same kinda thing happened to my man-candy about 3 years ago. We eventually reported his debit card lost (the FOP on the account) and he got a card with a new account number, so they couldn't continue to charge the account. Ridiculous.

Same happened to me about a year ago, they wouldn’t let me cancel the kept saying we can get you on a great deal, we can keep you for cheaper if you go down to a limited access account, blah blah, blah I wasn't as polite as Mr. Vincent Ferrari. I used a little foul language. Opps :)
